Healthy habits can protect you from the harmful effects of stress. Here are 10 positive healthy habits you may want to develop.

  1. Talk with family and friends.

A daily dose of friendship is great medicine. Call or writer friends and family to share your feelings, hopes and joys and ask them to share theirs.

  2. Engage in daily physical activity.

Regular physical activity can relieve mental and physical tension. Physically active adults have lower risk of depression and loss of mental functioning. Physical activity can be a great source of pleasure, too. Try walking, swimming, biking or dancing every day.

  3. Embrace the things you are able to change.

While we may not be able to do some of the things we once enjoyed, we are never too old to learn a new skill, work toward a goal, or love and help others.

  4. Remember to laugh.

Laughter makes us feel good. Don’t be afraid to laugh out loud at a joke, a funny movie or a comic strip, even when we’re alone.

  5. Give up the bad habits.

Too much alcohol, cigarettes or caffeine can increase blood pressure. If you smoke, decide to quit now. If you do drink alcohol, do so in moderation.

  6. Slow down.

Try to “pace” instead of “race.” Plan ahead and allow enough time to get the most important things done without having to rush.

  7. Get enough sleep.

Try to get six to eight hours of sleep each night. If you can’t sleep, take steps to help reduce stress and depression. Physical activity also may improve the quality of sleep and life in general.

  8. Get organized.

Use “to do” lists to help you focus on your most important tasks. Approach big tasks one step at a time. For example, start by organizing just one part of your life — your car, desk, kitchen, closet, cupboard or drawer.

  9. Practice giving back.

Volunteer your time or spend time helping out a friend. Helping others helps you.

  10. Try not to worry.

The world won’t end if your grass isn’t mowed or your kitchen isn’t cleaned. You may need to do these things, but right now might not be the right time.

You may have heard of workplace wellness programs and all of the perks that companies offer their employees to help them stay healthy and present. But maybe, for one reason or another, you’ve never really explored what your company has. Even though employee health is good for your company, the focus is YOU so why not take advantage of it all? Here are three benefits you won’t want to miss out on.

Youthful energy: The carefree spirits and good health associated with young adults can be yours too when you take advantage of all the benefits your wellness program has to offer! These programs typically include benefits that are tailored towards helping you to greater physical health — whether that is giving you free fitness classes, getting you a standing desk, or encouraging noontime walks. Being more active through these activities reduces your risk of a whole sleuth of preventable diseases, like obesity and heart disease! These little fitness-y breaks also help you have higher energy levels, a better mood, and less muscle stress. Really, who can say they wouldn’t like to be more healthy?

Organized fun: That being said, sometimes becoming more healthy is hard. Whether it’s to lose that holiday weight or swim a mile, having others support you as you strive towards your goals increases your likelihood of achieving them. Your coworker might be trying to accomplish the same goal, so you can train together and share tips!

Employee health and wellness programs also help you have a greater sense of community at work through team-bonding (or competitive) activities. Think a friendly baseball game with your coworkers vs employees from a different department, a golf outing with the CEOs, or a whole-company charity walk. It’s always fun to make more friends at work, especially through interesting wellness activities.

Unused cash: Even if you’re generally healthy, it would be silly to not use resources already given to you at free or very discounted rates – and you definitely don’t want to spend money on something that you could get for free. My dad has worked at his company for around 10 years and just found out a year ago that he’s been getting a free gym membership with his employment this whole time 😛 .

Besides saving money through free fitness passes, you might be able to save cash in other ways. At some companies, joining a wellness program will make your health insurance premium less expensive or give you free health services. Ask your company to see what you get!

Employees nowadays often spend their 8-hour days sitting slumped at their desk staring at a computer screen, but you don’t have to be one of those people if you partake in some wellness on the job. A healthier you is a happier you and maybe a more productive, likely-to-be promoted you!

stk134391rkeBack pains, eye strain, wrist problems…the modern work environment has a whole host of health issues built into it. Without having the right office setup, you can find yourself suffering from aches and pains that can make the workplace feel unbearable. The wrong setup can cause stress, aching and physical pains that may lead to irritation and even serious health issues. The good news? A lot of these issues can be fixed simply, easily and without much effort at all.

Office ergonomics is the focus on how to make your work space more efficient, by changing the physical aspects that may be holding you back. Here are some basic changes you can make to ensure a more productive workday and less at home pains.

Your Wrists

People have funny ways of holding the mouse and even stranger ways of typing. There’s nothing wrong with being unique, but improper form can cause wrist pains and even carpal tunnel. Try keeping your wrists and forearms straight while typing and keep your wrist slightly elevated while using the mouse, so it isn’t angled. If possible, consider buying a mouse with a wrist rest.

Your Back

I’m sure your mother at some point told you to sit up straight. Throughout a long work day it may be difficult, but good posture is key to keeping your back healthy. If you are able to, adjust your chair so you are sitting with your back straight, your legs 90 degrees and your feet flat on the floor. This will help with back pains, feet pains and even keeping you more alert and active.

Your Eyes

Eye strain can become a major issue, especially if you are spending your entire day at your desk. Make sure your screen is about 20-30 inches from your face and you are facing directly forward towards it. If need be, adjust the brightness of the screen, as well as the contrast. There are certain software programs that can help with adjusting your screen for the time of day, which can be very effective with reducing the strain on your eyes.

Remember, strange and awkward angles may feel good for a few minutes, but in the long run, they may cause health issues. If you’re feeling restless, stand up every once in a while and move around a bit. Stretch and relax; then sit back down with your back straight, wrists straight and head facing forward. These tips may seem pretty simple, but they could be the difference between a productive day at work and a rough day with serious pains.

Benefits of Workplace Yoga ClassesIf you have heard of the movie, The Secret, you have heard of the Law of Attraction, as well. The Law of Attraction is not something that simple comes your way; you have to put a little effort into, as well.

The law of attraction states that every positive or negative event that happened with you was attracted by you. You may or may not buy that completely, however, I will say There are techniques that you can use in order to make the Law of Attraction work for you so that you can get what you want out of life.

Learn How to Meditate Using Creative Visualization

First and foremost, if you are interested in utilizing the Law of Attraction to its fullest potential, make sure that you begin each day with meditation. Meditation is important as it brings your focus toward what you desire and what you expect for that day. Meditation will increase brain power and have your mind at that relaxed state.

Creative Visualization is a powerful tool in creating the feelings behind the desire. It is not enough to just meditate on something you wish to attract into your life, visualizing brings it to life.

Creative Visualization takes it one step further by incorporating the feelings you are feeling as you see yourself.  It has been successfully used in the fields of health/wellness, fitness/exercise,  education, business, sports, and the arts for many years.

As you embrace the feelings of joy and happiness, you will see that more joy and happiness will enter your life. Creating visualization makes this happen by using your emotions as triggers.

Learn the Art of Being Grateful

Being grateful means truly understanding how much we already do have without asking for any more. When you are in a state of gratitude, so many more things to be grateful for come our way.

Take a look around you, there is so much to be grateful for, but you need to stand up and take notice. When you start to understand the simple blessing such as butterflies or flowers that envelope your life, you will feel more joy. Once you feel more joy, you will manifest more joyful events in your life.

Write Your Own Thoughts

If you really want to get the most out of the Law of Attraction, then you must consciously control your own thoughts on a daily basis. Sometimes you must control your thoughts on a moment-by-moment basis.

If you find yourself going into negative or self-sabotaging thoughts, you need to take responsibility in several ways.

  • Think positively
  • Concentrate on all that you are grateful for
  • Give yourself positive affirmations

Focus as often as you can on what you DO want rather than on what you don’t want. For example, if you want to be healthier, or lose 25 pounds, focus on the results and the solutions you would like to see.

Start creating your thoughts to show up as you wish.  Remember, this is the first day of the rest of your life.  Focus on joy, happiness and success.  Start creating your own victory!

An aqua aerobics class.

There are millions of people around the world in constant and/or frequent pain on a chronic basis. Too often people who develop illness or conditions try to exercise only to find that it made their pain worse. An obvious subsequent lack of exercise then ensues, often leading to weight gain. This cycle means that millions of people with chronic pain conditions have a difficult time maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

But for these individuals, increased pain from exercise usually happens when they pushed themselves too hard physically. While a healthy person may be able to go swimming for 45 minutes or play tennis for a couple of hours, a person with chronic pain often needs to limit themselves. The goal of exercise for an individual with a chronic pain condition is usually to improve their physical health to make everyday activities easier. Therefore, such workouts should be moderately light and gentle.

Some exercises are obvious matches for meeting this criteria. Water-based actions such as walking in the water, water aerobics, and swimming are all excellent for people suffering from pain, particularly those who are overweight. The displacement of water helps make these exercises more gentle on joints in particular.

Other gentle exercises that provide numerous positive attributes to people with chronic pain include actions based on various methods of stretching and muscle work such as Pilates, yoga, and more.

In addition to the endorphins produced by exercise, these gentle actions are great for stress relief. Any individual with any chronic illness knows that stress upsets the system, causing more pain and suffering. Anyone who may be challenged due to physical fitness can use these ideas to improve their overall health and well-being.

As business owners or managers, it is important to remember that our most important assets are our employees! We want our employees to enjoy their work environment, and to bring the best of themselves to their jobs every day. Encouraging our employees to embrace fitness as a lifestyle choice pays off in numerous ways!

1. Fit employees are less likely to get sick. A person who is physically fit is generally more resistant to the “bug going around” than a person who is not fit. Reduced absenteeism and reduced health care expenditures are the result of a fit employee base.

2. Fit employees have more energy. One of the many benefits of regular exercise is increased and sustained energy throughout the day. This energy allows the employee to stay focused on the task at handing, bringing the best of themselves to each task.

3. Fit employees have more self-confidence. A fit and healthy individual tends to have a high level of self-confidence, because they have proven to themselves that they can accomplish what it takes to obtain a level of physical fitness. This self-confidence empowers the employee to challenge themselves, and strive for higher levels of achievement in the workplace.

4. Fit employees inspire confidence. An persona who maintains a high fitness level, tends to be a person in whom others have confidence.

5. Fit employees tend to take on more leadership roles. Because of the many positive benefits of a lifestyle, a fit individual tends to make a good leader

6. Fit employees set and achieve goals. Extraordinary fitness often demands that an individual set and reach goals related to their fitness. Learning to stay true to your goals and see them through to completion is a skill that is naturally brought into the workplace. An employee with the proven ability to set aggressive goals, and then REALIZE those goals, is a valuable asset to any organization.

7. Fit employees tend to have better attitudes. Fit employees generally “feel good”. They tend to have a physical and mental “balance” that results in a more positive attitude in the workplace.

8. Fit employees are less stressed. Regular exercise releases the physical AND emotional tensions that life brings our way, thus a fit employee tends to have lower overall stress levels than an employee who does not engage in regular exercise.

9. A fit employee base presents excellent team-building opportunities. Team activities like softball or tennis are wonderful ways for employees to take their professional relationships to new levels, and discover new ways of working together. Obviously, employees that maintain a level of fitness are more likely to participate in these activities.

10. Encouraging fitness demonstrates a concern for employee’s well-being, and pays off! Employees NOTICE when an employer shows concern for the health and well-being of their employee base through a variety of wellness programs. Further, it has been shown that employee turnover is significantly lower among employees that take advantage of a wellness program implemented by their employer.
